Writing Lessons

Good Morning Readers!

Here is something for you to read about form your story. This info came in an email to me from Writer's Digest.

***********

The 5 Essential Story Ingredients
Imagine that I'm telling you about my day and I say, "I woke up. I ate breakfast. I left for work." Is that a story? After all, it has a protagonist who makes choices that lead to a natural progression of events, it contains three acts and it has a beginning, a middle and an end-and that's what makes something a story, right? Well, actually, no. It's not. So let's look at five essential story ingredients, and then review how to mix them together to make your story so good readers will ask for seconds.

4 Reasons You're Procrastinating Instead of Writing
You have ideas for stories, but when you launch your word processor, you stare helplessly at a blank page. Every time you try to write, you end up spending the evening watching videos of cats on YouTube instead. Why is this happening? We've all been there. Here are a few things that might be getting in your way.

Here is the list of my fees again. Some one sent an email stating the website did not show my fees. So at the end of every blog post I'll show my fees.

Edits:  $48.00  (proofread for scripts)

Critique :  $58.00 ( for scripts)

Query Letters :  $28.00 (scripts/books):

Synopsis :  $38.00 (script/books):

Edits for Books:  $90.00

Critiques for Books:  $125.00

Some people request edits and critiques together. If a writer wants both, to me this says the writer is not completely confident his or her script is ready. So I  recommend getting the critique first. Use the critique to redo the script. Once the script is just right, then request the edit.

However, there are script writers who insist on having both an edit and critique together.  So I offer an edit and critique combo at discount.

Edit &Critique Combo Discount: $76.00   This is a discount savings of $30.00

New Literary Agents

3 New Agents to Query

Click on any name below to see the full mini-profile on the GLA Blog (with submission instructions). Good luck querying!

1. Cate Hart of Corvisiero Literary Agency

She is seeking: Cate is seeking Young Adult and Middle Grade, New Adult and Adult Romance (specifically Historical Romance), and select erotica and LGBT. She is a fan of quirky, character-driven Young Adult, and snort-out-loud Middle Grade adventure. She loves Historical and Fantasy and would like to find a steampunk that explores new settings and ideas beyond Victorian London. She is also interested in magical realism, high fantasy, mystery, and any combination of the above.

2. Rena Rossner of The Deborah Harris Agency

She is seeking: "I am most interested in representing Fantasy and Science Fiction in all its permutations - Adult, Middle Grade, Young Adult etc. I also look for Middle Grade and Young Adult contemporary stories and I'd be open to MG/YA mysteries and thrillers as well. I represent quite a few picture books and I'm always looking for those. In terms of adult books, I look for Literary Fiction, Historical Fiction, multicultural books, and I'd also consider adult mysteries, thrillers and psychological suspense, but not cozy mysteries. I specifically look for literary work (in any genre,) and books with elements of magical realism and the fantastic. You will steal my heart for sure if it's set in the Middle East, in Israel or if it has Jewish or Israeli themes and characters, but I'm open to all themes, settings and characters. You've got to have a really good reason to send me nonfiction, or cookbooks, but if you have a reason that seems to fit with who I am and what I'm looking for, I'll take a look."

3. Holly Lorincz of MacGregor Literary

She is seeking: "I am currently only accepting general market submissions in these areas: historical romance, literary or classic westerns, political or conspiracy thrillers, women's fiction, or literary fiction."

Pointers On Writing Good Dialog

Dear readers,

Here's some info on writing dialog. I got it in my email the other day. It reflects much of what I tell writers.

The 7 Tools of Dialogue

Today's newsletter is from the amazing writing James Scott Bell. Check it out (and check out his book filled with practical writing advice, Conflict & Suspense).

My neighbor John loves to work on his hot rod. He's an automotive whiz and tells me he can hear when something is not quite right with the engine. He doesn't hesitate to pop the hood, grab his bag of tools and start to tinker. He'll keep at it until the engine sounds just the way he wants it to.

That's not a bad way to think about dialogue. We can usually sense when it needs work. What fiction writers often lack, however, is a defined set of tools they can put to use on problem areas.

So here's a set-my seven favorite dialogue tools. Stick them in your writer's toolbox for those times you need to pop the hood and tinker with your characters' words.   Read more...

Sometimes-despite our best efforts-the most unexpected things can happen to influence the direction of our work. Sometimes it's a good thing-like an unexpected prize or award-and sometimes it's not. The best way freelancers can weather the ups and downs is through diversifying.

Diversifying takes many forms. It means working with multiple clients to protect against losing any one stream of income suddenly drying up. It can also mean diversifying freelance types. For instance, some freelancers write books, sell magazine articles, and earn money through blogging and/or speaking.

Speaking of diversifying! Learn how to write incredible copy and break into the lucrative field of copywriting with the Breaking Into Copywriting: Use Your Creativity to Kick-Start a New Career course. Writing Resources

Dear Reader,

Happy Friday.

Today's post is all about studying. I am a strong believer in education. People have different interests in different fields, such as art, teaching, medicine, sports, engineering, business, and literature. Before attempting to do actual work in these fields, you must study them.

This rule goes for writing a book. We get ideas for writing a novel or nonfiction book, and we write it. When we're done we think we have created the greatest work of literature. Then when we send it to an agent, the agent says it is the worst book he or she ever read.

Before attempting to write you great idea into a story, study about the craft of writing. It is like learning how to write the alphabet before attempting to write your name.

Below are a list of books that teach the art of writing. I strongly suggest buying some or all of them. They can help you in your writing endeavors.
