Story Development: What Story Can You See In A Picture?

A picture is worth 20,000 to 30,000 words, the size of an average novel, or a 110 p. to 125 p. film script. A writer gets inspiration from different ways. One of them can be simple from looking at picture. In the scene it depicts there is a story or many stories that can be told.

I first learned this years ago in school when I saw a picture in an anime fan art magazine. It was a picture of a spooky forest with a stairway leading to the sky. The picture made an impression on me. All sorts of story scenarios began popping in my head. I chose one and wrote a short story.

In the picture below, what story or stories do you see?

In this picture, I see :

  • A poor girl who has just arrived to work in a mansion. She's intrigued by the portrait of the manor's handsome young lord,  whom she has to serve.
  • A girl is living on her own now. She has moved to a kingdom ruled by a handsome young lord. His pictures are all over town. Everyone is afraid of him. Eventfully she meets him.
  • A girl is out shopping and running errands. She gets lost and somehow ends up at the art museum. She is intrigued by a portrait of a handsome young man. While gazing at it his eyes light up and his lips forms a mysterious smile. Only she sees it.

What do you see in the picture above? Write your thoughts in a comment to share with everyone.
