Happy Election Day!

Hello all fellow American writers!

Today is the day!

Time to vote for another President!

I already voted. Here in Washington state we vote by mail-in ballots, which makes things easy.

I encourage all Americans who have not voted to vote. It is an important right we must act on. I will not tell you who to vote for. That is your business. But please go out there and vote. Our votes don't just affect us here in America. Our vote affects everyone around the world.

Another thing to note, don't just vote during a presidential election. Vote every time there is an election in your local community.

VOTE FOR ME OR ELSE!

Literary Agents Currently Seeking Young Adult Writers

2 New Agents Seeking Submissions NOW
Click on any name below to see the full mini-profile on the GLA Blog (with submission instructions). Good luck querying!

1. Anna Worrall of The Gernert Company

She is seeking: smart women's literary and commercial fiction, psychological thrillers, and narrative nonfiction.

2. Tracy Marchini of BookEnds

She is seeking: picture book, middle grade and young adult manuscripts across most genres, including contemporary, mysteries, thrillers, magical realism, historical fiction, and non-fiction. For picture book fiction, she's particularly interested in manuscripts that are laugh out loud funny or deliciously dark. For middle grade and young adult, she's interested in underdogs, strong female characters and/or unreliable narrators. She believes that it's important for readers of all backgrounds to see themselves reflected in the media they consume, and is looking to bring that diversity to her list.
17 Literary Agents Seeking Young Adult Science Fiction and Fantasy NOW

Sometimes it's difficult to pinpoint which agents are open to submissions at any given time. So with that in mind, I'm creating some new vertical lists of agents seeking queries right now, as of summer 2016. This list is for Young Adult Science Fiction and Fantasy. All the agents listed below personally confirmed to me as of August 2016 that they are actively seeking YA Science Fiction and Fantasy (speculative) submissions NOW. Some gave personal notes about their tastes while some did not. Good luck querying!

Notes: 1) This list is specifically for young adult sci-fi and fantasy. (Another list in this newsletter is for adult fantasy.) Unless an agent says otherwise, they are open to both young adult science fiction and fantasy, not just one or the other.

1.  Kaylee Davis (Dee Mura Literary)

Notes: She seeks particularly epic, contemporary, near-future, and diverse. She has a special interest in locked-room mysteries, psychological, multiple POVs, lesser-explored settings, and unusual retellings.

How to Submit: Send queries to query [@] deemuraliterary.com. Put your name and the project title in the subject. Include a synopsis and the first 25 pages of your ms in the body of the email.

2. Renee Nyen (KT Literary)

Notes: "I love non-traditional family structures (thinking specifically LGBTQIA+ here), and I'm always fascinated by deeply religious families. I'd like to find a YA fantasy/sci-fi with a transgender main character."

How to Submit: Please submit a query letter with the first three pages of your manuscript pasted in the email to queries [@] ktliterary.com.When querying Renee, do not query Hannah Fergeson, also on this list.

I love a good 'bad guy.'

I also love a good 'bad woman.'

If a film or screenplay makes me loath but love, then empathise but hate the antagonist - all in one sitting - then a massive bravo to that screenwriter from yours truly (insert standing ovation here).

The antagonist is arguably the most complex and fascinating (and definitely my personal favourite) character in fiction, and as a story analyst, it always makes me fist pump the sky in my mind when I come across that rare gem in a script. What you'll be pleased to know, is that not every screenwriter with agents or huge credits in Hollywood are completely exempt from writing the odd 'flat' antagonist, so how can you plump him/her up and deliver a full-bodied and exciting character?

The key is in his psychology. Who is the antagonist and why does he do the things he does? As the writer, you are responsible for giving soul and consciousness to your characters, and when you allow for your characters to become three dimensional, sentient beings, they become decision makers for themselves and this is what ultimately drives the plot forward.

"If we could read the secret history of our enemies, we should find in each man's life sorrow and suffering enough to disarm all hostility." (Henry Wadsworth Longfellow)

For every action the antagonist takes in opposition to their protagonist, there must be a motivation, a reason behind their choices. These could stem from...

New Literary Agent Alert: Sarah Manning of United Talent Agency

New literary agents (with this spotlight featuring Sarah Manning of United Talent Agency) are golden opportunities for new writers because each one is a literary agent who is likely building his or her client list.

Sarah's Currently Seeking: She is looking to actively build her list and represents both fiction and non-fiction. Sarah's taste is varied and she enjoys crime, thrillers, historical fiction, commercial women's fiction, accessible literary fiction, fantasy and YA. She likes big ideas that look at events or characters from new perspectives.

Here's how to pitch Sarah ...

1. Marya Spence of Janklow & Nesbit

She is seeking: Marya represents a diverse range in fiction and nonfiction, including, but not limited to, literary novels and collections, upmarket commercial fiction, cultural criticism and voice-driven essays, narrative journalism with a humorous or critical edge, and pop culture.

7 Literary Agents Seeking Thrillers NOW

Sometimes it's difficult to pinpoint which agents are open to submissions at any given time. So with that in mind, I'm creating some new vertical lists of agents seeking queries right now, as of summer 2016. This list is for thrillers. All the agents listed below personally confirmed to me as of July 2016 that they are actively seeking historical romance submissions NOW. Some gave personal notes about their tastes while some did not. Good luck querying!

1. Carrie Pestritto (Prospect Agency)

Notes: "I am looking for thrillers, but am looking for more high-concept thrillers aimed at a female audience rather than police procedurals, etc."

How to Submit: Upload submission through online submissions page. Do not query by mail or email. Include a synopsis and query letter with your email and contact information at the beginning of the manuscript body (3 chapters or first 30 pages).

2. Bernadette Baker Baughman (Victoria Sanders & Associates)

How to Submit : Send a query letter with the first three chapters (or about 25 pages) pasted into the body of the message to queriesvsa [@] gmail.com. Only accepts queries via e-mail. Query letters should describe the project and the author in the body of a single, one-page e-mail that does not contain any attached files.

Books Wanted by Publishers and Agents

Hello, readers.

Happy Summer!

I've been so busy. I've been working on scripts for clients and working on my own material.

People have been asking me what  can they write to get agents' attention. Well, I'll tell you what agents have told me. In querying my own book, I have been told that the writing quality is good but the story, or subject matter, although it is unique, is not what publishers are looking for. Publishers want mysteries and thrillers for the adult and young adult market. I have been told to apply my quality writing to form a mystery or thriller.

Several agents told me not to be too unique. I was told to read the bestsellers in mysteries and thrillers, look at the story content and create a similar story slightly different with different situations and a different twist. To every agent I communicate with I say, "isn't that plagiarism?" They say no. One agent explained it this away. "Think of  an airplane, you have Airbus and you have Boeing. It's like an apple tree. You have granny smith and you have fuji. It's like the ice cream flavor butter pecan, you have Ben and Jerry's butter pecan and Walmart's Great Value butter pecan. The things are the same but there is a unique difference.

So when applying this concept to writing. a writer can create a story that is well formed and written and completely different from what is on the market. In the market, readers of all ages are craving mysteries and thrillers. This is what's bringing in the money. The best sellers are similar yet there is a unique difference, like granny smith and fuji are both apples, but they taste different. This is the fine line that separates your story idea from plagiarism."

Another agent told me that books that are too unique have low sells. The public craves the fad.

I hope this explanation helps everyone. It certainly helped me. Remember. Don't be too unique. Follow the market fads.

What Every Writer Needs to Know about Keeping a Personal Diary
I'd never thought much about diaries until I was well into researching my latest book: The Point Is: Making Sense of Birth, Death, and Everything in Between. The book's about how each of us, beginning a young age, begins collecting memories. And how, as if by magic, we build a story out of them-the story of our life, the narrative we carry in our heads. Just like a written story, it's got a beginning, a middle, and eventually an end. Some chapters are happy, others we'd delete if we could. There are any number of turning points along the way.

Here's what you can learn from keeping a journal ...

How to Use Surprise to Build Suspense
In 1962, Alfred Hitchcock and Francois Truffaut discussed their work during a marathon lasting fifty hours over five days. The two great directors and their French/English interpreter barely paused for meals. It was during this conversation that Hitchcock gave his famous surprise versus suspense example-the bomb planted in the café. He used this example to demonstrate that contrary to popular belief, suspense is far more engaging than surprise.

The difference between surprise and suspense is ...

How to Write for Teens Without Sounding Like an Adult Writing for Teens
Ask any agent and they'll tell you the trick to nailing young adult writing is in the voice. And even though I spend my workdays with teens, I heard it countless times when I was looking for representation for my failed first YA novel. So when I finally buried that novel for good and moved on to what became DON'T GET CAUGHT, I was determined to make sure the voice was right. It took more than eight drafts and constant revisions, but ultimately I signed with an agent who sold the book in a little over a month. The trick, I've found, is first to get yourself back to thinking like a teenager again, and once there, writing your novel as a teenager would.

Here are 10 practical tips on how to do just that ...
